He is best known, perhaps, as the author of Practical Air Navigation, of which more than 1,000,000 copies have been issued. ![]() Lyon, a cartographer specializing in air navigation since 1927. It cannot be used for any of the other stars, nor for the sun, moon, or planets.Īssociated with the development of the Star Altitude Curves from the beginning was Thoburn C. The only limitation of the method is that it is restricted to use with the three stars for which it has been prepared. The increased speed of solution is obtained by the greater simplicity of the method, with no loss of accuracy. In effect, the new polar star altitude curves provide a graphic computer which appreciably speeds up the final determination of position. For the north polar area, therefore, the star altitude curves were recently reissued in a new form. For other-than-simultaneous observations, several adjustments were required which tended to slow down the final solution. For the stars for which they were prepared, they represent one of the fastest methods yet developed. The Star Altitude Curves were developed by the writer to remedy this situation. With speeds which are already becoming commonplace, it may only be possible to say that “at the time of observation the aircraft was there"- at a point nearly 100 miles away. The chief weakness of celestial navigation at high speeds, aside from observational difficulties, has been the time required to translate observations into position. “Celestial” navigation is specified because it is as yet the mainstay of navigation in the polar regions. ![]() By “high speed celestial navigation,” in this case, we have in mind not only the methods suitable for today’s high speed aircraft, but also the faster methods of position determination which they require. ![]()
